Sturgis Rally Starts Friday, Up To 500,000 People Expected To Attend

Via boston25news.com. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is the largest gathering of motorcycle enthusiasts in the world. Every August up to 500,000 bikers roar into the small town of Sturgis, South Dakota for over a week of beer drinkin', bike showin', concerts, wet t-shirt contests, and debauchery.

This year is...different. With the coronavirus pandemic there were questions whether this would, or should, happen. 60% of the residents of Sturgis wanted this year's rally cancelled. At a city council meeting in June, Sturgis resident Linda Chaplin said, “This is a huge, foolish mistake to host the rally this year. The government of Sturgis needs to care most for its citizens.”

Despite a majority of the local community voting to postpone the event, businesses pressured the city council to proceed. So starting this Friday August 7th and running through August 16th, the bikes will roar! Nobody is sure how many will show up because of travel restrictions and fear of the virus. They're estimating around 250,000 but there's a possibility it could be the biggest crowd ever because of cabin fever.

What do you think? Should the rally be happening? Will people social distance? Here's a taste of the Sturgis experience...
