James Hampton, Star of "F Troop," And, "The Longest Yard," Dies At 84

Via nypost.com. James Hampton, known as the bumbling bugle player Hannibal Dobbs from “F Troop," and Caretaker from the 1974 Burt Reynolds movie “The Longest Yard” — died Wednesday. He was 84.

His family said he died at his home in Fort Worth, Texas due to complications from Parkinson’s disease. Even though "F Troop" only ran for 2 seasons, the show became a cult favorite, with Hannibal Dobbs struggling to get anything to come out of that bugle. James had a long career in TV and film with appearances in shows like “Melrose Place,” “Full House,” “Perfect Strangers,” “Newhart,” “Days of Our Lives,” “Mama’s Family,” “Punky Brewster,” “Murder, She Wrote,” “The Dukes of Hazzard,” “Mannix,” “Love, American Style,” “The Rockford Files,” and movies like "Teen Wolf" where he played Michael J. Fox's Dad.
