Stand Up for Autism group celebrates Local Heroes at Lucedale Library

The Lucedale-George County Public Library will host Autism Support Group meeting to celebrate Local Heroes on Thursday, January 31, beginning at 4:30 p.m., in the library meeting room. This special event is to give you a chance to meet your local Emergency Response Teams. Police, Fire, EMS and don’t forget teachers who protect our loved ones in school. Watch as they are taught how to handle situations involving Autism. Get to know them and help build trust between them and the Autistic community! These presentations will be held in two sessions and open to all ages and will be held in the meeting room. Ms. McNelley will be discussing Autism: how to cope with Autism, different resources available, and much more. Learn what you need to help the ones you love. Cindy McNelley is the President of the Board of Directors for the South Mississippi Special Needs Organization. She is a former Area Support Director and Chapter Leader with TEAAM Autism (2007 - 2014) serving individuals with all disabilities and their families. SNO sponsors several social events during the year such as the Annual Valentine’s Dance, Beautiful Me Pageant, and 3-Day Mini Camp which offers classes in Arts and Crafts, Theatre and Music, as well as the annual Halloween Party, www.southmssno.com . She has a granddaughter and a grandson on the Autism Spectrum. Her grandson was diagnosed at the age of nineteen with Asperger’s, her granddaughter was diagnosed at age three.

The 31st annual Arbor Day 5K-1 Mile-1/4 Mile Run/Walk/Roll for disability awareness is Saturday, February 23 rd at the Biloxi Town Green in front of the Hard Rock Casino. The Run is a partnership between Disability Connection and the Gulf Coast Running Club to encourage people with disabilities to enjoy the healthful fun of a run. The Run registration fee is $20 per person. Early discount registration is available through February 14 th at www.GulfCoastRunningClub.org    All participants receive a t-shirt and 300 trees will be given away to runners. Everyone with challenges to running receive a medal.   Registration begins at 8:00. The 5k starts at 9:00; the 1 mile and ¼ Mile start at 9:45. Following the run/walk/roll is a free party with live music, refreshments, special needs soccer, a bounce house, free health screenings, games, and art activities.The Biloxi Fire truck will be available for kids to explore. This fun outdoor event promotes healthy lifestyles to individuals of all ages with and without disabilities. This event has 2 goals to encourage a healthy lifestyle: to provide information on disability supports including employment, and to encourage people with disabilities to be active community participants by joining the fun of a run. The Arbor Day Run/Walk/Roll is a partnership with the Gulf Coast Running Club, the most respected running club in South Mississippi. The race includes a ¼ mile challenge so that everyone, including wheelchairs, can participate in the healthful benefits of a run with awards following.

The Grillin on the Green Committee is also now accepting artwork for the T-Shirt Design Contest

 The theme of all artwork submitted should include the following elements:

  • BBQ, ST. Patrick’s Day or Irish Elements, should say Biloxi
  • Size should be 11” x 14”, Remember this is for tee shirt only should be fun & colorful

Winner will receive 5 tee shirts $100 cash & $100 downtown Gift card

  • No colored pencil entries please

Entry deadline is Friday February 15th, 2019, 4 P.M. Turn in location is the Bond Grant House, 932 Howard Ave. Biloxi.

The day long festival is scheduled for Saturday, March 16, 2019 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Biloxi’s

Town Green.  Don’t forget that the Hibernia Society’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade will pass right by

the festival area at 2:00 PM!

Biloxi Main Street District is pleased to announce the 13th annual Grillin’ On The Green . The day long festival is scheduled for Saturday, March 16, 2019 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Biloxi’s Town Green, located at 710 Beach Blvd. Biloxi. Admission is free. Event features live entertainment all day: Rhythm & Rain at 10 a.m., Black Water Brass at noon, and Ty Taylor & The Kinfolk at 3 p.m. This year’s event promises to be bigger than ever! There will be a variety of barbecue for event patrons to choose from. With everything from ribs and brisket to seafood, there will be something for every pallet! Over $6000 in prize money given to Grillin winners!   Applications are being accepted for craft vendors and grilling competitors at this time and is on a first come first serve basis. Spaces are filling up quickly because of limited availability.
