Coast beaches reopen.

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has officially reopened all 21 beaches along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The beaches were closed earlier this summer after toxic blue-green algae bloom, caused by backwater flooding, mixed in with the salt water of the Gulf of Mexico, posing a health hazard to humans and marine life. The shutdown of Mississippi beaches had a devastating economic effect on Gulf Coast tourism this summer.
